Spring Conferences & Events with 100,000 Strong in the Americas

Events & Conferences As part of our efforts to continue to promote 100K Strong’s work and opportunities, the team submits session proposals to various regional higher education/international education conferences, of which most are accepted. During the reporting period, the team attended and traveled to the following conferences to present on 100K.

Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Annual Conference

From February 18 -19, 2024, POA attended the AIEA Annual Conference in Washington, DC. While at the conference, the team conducted the session, “100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund: Leveraging Innovation Grants for Mobility Programs.” During the session, POA gave a brief overview of 100K upcoming grant competitions, and general program requirements. This was followed by presentations from past grantees, Carolina Coronado-Park from the University of Northern Iowa, and Dr. Susana Vegas from Universidad de Piura, each receiving three 100K grants over the years, who shared the impact of the 100K grant on their institution, their partnerships with other institutions, and students and faculty. Summar Lyons, Associate Director for 100K also attended the conference in a volunteer capacity to network with attendees and promote 100K opportunities.

Community College for International Development (CCID) Annual Conference

(Feb 23-26)

The session featured Merryn Clay of Tompkins Cortland Community College and Carol Fimmen of the College of Southern Nevada, who both spoke about their 100K projects, partnerships, successes, and challenges in creating international student exchange and training programs at their institutions.

FAUBAI Annual Conference

(Apr 20-24)

The FAUBAI Annual Conference in São Paulo, a premier event focused on the internationalization of higher education in Latin America, brought together over 600 professionals from around the world to engage in meaningful dialogue and explore new academic partnerships. Highlights included sessions on the 100K Strong grant opportunities, where Brazilian grantees shared successful grant application strategies and program implementation tips, and a workshop on ‘Opportunities and Partnerships with the United States,’ featuring insights from the #100kstrongamericas team, the Fulbright Program, and Education USA. The conference underscored the importance of strategic collaborations and the sharing of best practices, leaving attendees inspired and well-informed to advance international education and strengthen academic ties globally.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators (NAFSA) Annual Conference

(May 28-31)

NAFSA, the world’s largest association dedicated to international education and exchange, hosts its annual conference and expo, attracting over 8,000 professionals from around the globe. This event highlights the latest innovations and best practices in international education. For 100k, dedicated to advancing international higher education through grants to U.S. and Latin American & Caribbean (LAC) institutions, the conference is crucial for networking with university leaders, grantees, and government officials.

At the conference, our team attended sessions on program monitoring, student engagement, marketing, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. These sessions provided us with valuable best practices and resources. A key highlight was our Breakfast Event celebrating 12 years of 100k’s impact, attended by 160 guests, including representatives from grant-winning institutions, VIPs, and attendees from eight countries. Speeches from key figures like our Director of Partnership and members of the Department of State Western Hemisphere Affairs offered significant insights.

Speakers from grant-winning institutions emphasized the transformative power of our grants on their students and faculty. Jose Santiago from ETS, our event sponsor, also contributed meaningful remarks. The 2024 NAFSA conference was an excellent opportunity for 100k to celebrate our achievements and build connections, reinforcing our commitment to international higher education and expanding our impact.
