Promoting Study Abroad Partnerships For Innovation and Collaboration

Northeastern University, in collaboration with Universidad de los Andes in Chile, the Fundação Getúlio Vargas and INSPER in Brazil, and the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine in Trinidad & Tobago, developed a three-pronged initiative aimed at creating institutional capacity in the areas of program design, international student service delivery, and peer advising. Experiential learning influenced curriculum design for language learning and student and faculty research design exploring common problems. During the first quarter, the Director of the Global Experience Office of Northeastern traveled to Trinidad and Chile, with the trip to Brazil planned for December 2015. Later in the fall, Latin American counterparts visited Northeastern. Faculty members in music, physical therapy, engineering, business, marine science, and law were introduced to the exchange program, which further tailored Northeastern’s unique Dialogue of Civilizations (DOC) program in music and electrical engineering at the University of the West Indies and the Universidad de los Andes, respectively. The music program centers on the legacy of African traditions in Trinidadian carnival. The engineering program centered on developing hyper spectral imaging information. A group of thirty (3) students will be engaged through this program in both directions.
