International Cooperation for the Development of Environmental/Energy Projects
Texas A&M University – Texarkana developed an environmental/energy study abroad program in Bucaramanga, Colombia, focused on service learning and research based projects. This partnership involved collaboration with Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga in order to increase student mobility in the Americas, by sending eight (8) students from each abroad to their counterpart institution. The program focused on an innovative approach that combined education and inter-institutional team teaching with opportunities for student participation in study abroad experiences. The program was divided in three components: team teaching, young researchers, and project proposal. Overall, the study abroad opportunity turned out to be a success due to the life-changing experience of being immersed in another culture. Students were able to develop a smart pipeline model and accomplish the development of a structure [pavilion] dedicated to the teaching of environmental issues. Also, students had the opportunity to apply their skills at an environmental fair activity for the students at Colegio Panamericano. Ultimately, the primary objective of developing a strong working partnership between these two institutions was definitely achieved, as students and faculty developed long-lasting relationships that went beyond the project.
