Inclusion and Diversity through Migration Studies Abroad
Universidad La Salle Oaxaca (La Salle Oaxaca) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will develop a joint, multidisciplinary program centered on the impacts of transnational migration on the host communities. Students from both institutions will enroll in courses, including indigenous students from Oaxaca and economically-disadvantaged students from Richmond, receive language instruction, and more importantly, participate in service-learning opportunities that will allow students to help serve the needs of indigenous communities in Oaxaca and of refugees and immigrants in Richmond. For the service-learning component of the program, La Salle Oaxaca students will work in an established summer day camp program serving local migrant communities in Richmond; while in Oaxaca, VCU students will work in an after-school program in local Zapotec communities. Upon return from travel, students will connect and integrate concepts learned in the classroom with first-hand experiences of the impact of globalization on affected communities by showcasing their experience in a virtual conference.
