Celebrating International Cultura Fuerte‐Maya

California State University, Monterey Bay (United States) and Universidad IntSanaercultural Maya de Quintana Roo, (Mexico).

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a celebration of the incredible achievements of women in the field of science. As part of this celebration, the program 100,000 Strong in the Americas is proud to share the story of one of our successful grantees’ projects Cultura Fuerte‐Maya Sana, between California State University, Monterey Bay (United States) and Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo, (Mexico).

This innovative program fostered a two-way exchange where students acquired health and nutrition assessment skills while delivering a culturally tailored Zumba course to Mayan communities through the Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya Network. What sets this initiative apart was its emphasis on empowering women in traditionally underrepresented fields of study, showcasing their leadership and expertise in health and wellness initiatives. As part of the project, students not only gained valuable hands-on experience but also contributed meaningfully to communities in need. By offering their expertise to the Mayan communities, they helped promote health and well-being while celebrating cultural diversity. Furthermore, by sharing their experiences in Salinas, California, a vital agricultural hub and underserved urban area, these students demonstrated the impact of their work on diverse populations, particularly underserved women in the agricultural sector.

This success story serves as a testimony of the transformative power of education, cross-cultural exchange, and women’s leadership, by propelling positive change, fostering inclusivity in communities globally, underlining the significance of investing in the advancement of women in STEM+A fields, and the profound impact it can have on shaping a more equitable and inclusive society.

As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we honor and support the next generation of female scientists and engineers who will be instrumental in shaping a sustainable future for everyone.
